T1: West Coast Mines Tour

Sunday 17 – Tuesday 19 September 2017

Western Tasmania is one of the most highly endowed mineral provinces in the world for it’s size.  The region hosts a diversity of commodities including copper, lead, zinc, silver, gold, tin, tungsten, nickel, iron ore, and silica flour currently in production or scheduled for production.

The rich mineral endowment is mainly attributable to two major tectonic events: the Cambrian Tyennan Orogeny and the Devonian Tabberabberan Orogeny.  Both the Proterozoic and Palaeozoic events have produced a diversity of commodity and deposit styles including world class VHMS deposits at Rosebery and Hellyer, world class Tin deposits at Renison Bell and Mt Bischoff as well as the world class Dolphin Scheelite Deposit on King Island.

Other deposits of note include the long lived historic Mt Lyell Copper Mine, the unusual Avebury Nickel Skarn, the high-grade Henty Gold Mine, the enigmatic Savage River Magnetite deposit and the Kara Scheelite-Magnetite skarns.

This three day tour travels through the diverse central and western Tasmanian landscape while showcasing some of the major deposits ofm this historic Australian mining district.
